How we got our name

We raise miniature herefords, lowliness and miniature angus cows. Young female cows are properly called heifers. I have this one heifer that’s cute as a button. Dark red and she’s plump. Not fat just plump. As a cattleman – we use the term “She maintains an excellent BCS (Body Conditioning Score). She has excellent conformation meaning short legs, stocky, full round rump, nice tubular body, and etc. Well she’s also an escape artist. She manages to get out of the pasture almost at will. She won’t stray too far from the mother but she gets out and does it often. She’ll see us coming down the driveway and maneuver her body between the strands of wire to get back inside the pasture. Almost as though to laugh at and mock us. Well one morning when moving all the cows from one pasture to the other, she kept running and would not come thru the gate. When I finally did get her thru and I noticed how plump she was I exclaim "You Lil Fat Ass Heifer!”. Now that’s a compliment to her. If she didn’t look as good as she does, I’d probably cull her from the herd with the problem of her getting out. But seeing how good she looks, I realize that her potential seems to outweigh the cons. I have a special appreciation for this lil “Fat Ass Heifer”.

With that said - My darling 'Lil Fat Ass Heifer was evidently what my Grandmother would have called a "Lil Fat ass" Heifer.

Today she is a heifer no more, in May 2017 she became a Mama cow!

About Us

Motlow Creek Ranch and Cider Company, Inc. is owned by John Macomson. John splits his time being a small cattle rancher (with a focus on SMALL Cattle), Fruit grower, and IT services company owner/manager. The Ranch and Cider Company is a start-up and John is grateful for the small team of dedicated family and friends that are helping to make this operation a go. This includes his wife, Denise along with several others that have been lassoed into helping by “Whatever means necessary”.

Our mission is to be South Carolina’s premier source for creative hard ciders and perrys – produced here – yet still providing a glimpse into cider types from around the world. Our unique offerings will be the ciders made and blended here, the farm-fresh livestock products, on-farm dinners and providing visitors an authentic “Motlow Creek Ranch and Cidery” Experience!

Our Location

Motlow Creek Ranch and Cider Company (MCRC), Inc., is located in Campobello, South Carolina, a small scenic farm with a lake, mountain views and several 100 year old heart-pine barns. The ranch takes its name from the small, picturesque creek flowing through the property.

The ranch has been producing farm fresh Hereford beef since 2004, albeit on a limited basis. We have expanded the farm operation to include a TTB approved Domestic winery focusing on Hard Apple (fermented) Cider with most of our juice coming from within state. The hard cider will be for sale in our on premise tasting room. Farm-fresh meats will be available for sale in our on-farm store and gift shop. These products are intended to be the central, distinguishing menu items for our “farm dinner” private events. Within three years we hope to expand to have an off-premise location where we’ll sell both products as well. Most likely this will be a downtown Spartanburg location.

The Hereford-Cider Guest House

The Hereford-Cider House is over 100 years old and restored to give the feel of a rustic log cabin inside but still retaining much of the charm of an old farm house with tin roof. The house is approximately 1000 square ft. Has heart pine floors and new pine floors. All new plumbing fixtures and even includes a washer and dryer for guests. The master bedroom suite is a true heirloom antique. Is solid mahogany and was custom made as the wedding gift for the mother of a dear friend over 100 years ago. There’s a second bedroom and an entire upstairs loft. The house has gorgeous handmade rustic wooden benches throughout to add to the charming country character. There’s an eclectic collection of old barns (about 7). They’re all heart pine construction. They’re gradually being restored but are stand strong to show the perseverance and ingenuity of the farms previous owner. You will have access to 51 acres of land, a 4 acre stocked lake, and old growth pecan and azaleas trees.
